Nenthead Mines

Today our local history group visited Nenthead mines, which is about 5 miles from Cowshill. The photos on the left show the smelt mill, with the tubs in the foreground. It was in production for nearly 160 years, but closed down in 1896. The photo on the right shows the waterwheel, and you can go up the steps onto the top and pull a lever to release the water, and so turn the wheel. Looking from above, you can see the water turning the wheel. There were also several workshops to look around, and a cafe and shop. As it was a really hot day, we were all ready for a drink and ice cream!!
