Fairways

The bungalow on the opposite side of the main road to North Grain is called Fairways.  This is taken from the other side of the river.  The marker can be seen at the river side at the front of the photo

North Grain

 The houses at North Grain are on the roadside between Cowshill and Wearhead so the backs of the houses are only seen when walking along the other side of the river.  There are three houses in the terrace, and a detached house, the nearest to the camera.

Stanhope Ford


Stanhope Ford, which used to be crossed by car at any time, is now closed because people have tried to cross during floods and got stuck in the middle, costing huge sums of money to rescue them. It is now only open for certain events, and by
 permission as shown in the bottom photo.  The grounds at the top left are Newtown House.

Stanhope Railway Crossing House

The Old Railway Crossing near Unthank, with the steep hill behind which leads to Teesdale. The old line, now disused, runs parallel to the River Wear.

Unthank

Unthank Farm is just next to the ford at Stanhope, on the road which leads to Teesdale.  The field behind is used as Stanhope Show Field in September every year.  One of the oldest houses in the dale.

Newtown House



Newtown House in Stanhope is a residential home for the elderly. Taken from the other side of the River Wear, it has lovely grounds and the house itself looks very spacious.

Stanhope Old Stone Bridge


The Old Stone Bride in Stanhope is on the road behind Horn Hall, and just upstream from the Ford. The photo at the left is the east side, the right photo is the west side.  The road over the bridge continues to the right up the backroad to Horsley and to the left up over the fell to Teesdale. It is one of the oldest bridges in Weardale.
